Portugal was founded as a nation in 1143 and is therefore one
of Europe’s oldest  countries.


In 1415, the Portuguese set sail  to discover  the ocean routes  to India, Brazil, China and Japan, and  at the same time founded settlements on the east and west coasts  of Africa. The Portuguese language  became  one of the most widely spoken in the world.  Even now some 200 million  people  
speak the language worldwide.

The vast monumental, artistic and archaeological heritage gained in
Portugal over the years, was affected by ancient cultures of the Celts,   
Sumerians, Visigoths, Romans and Arabs.

With  so much history on your doorstep, it is no wonder the city of 
Oporto in the north of Portugal, was elected the European “Capital 
City of Culture".

Since becoming a member of the European Union in 1986,  the country saw remarkable economic performance, structural change and rapid growth, before adopting the single currency (euro) in 2001.

Portugal is the westernmost country in Continental Europe, with Spain on the north and east, and the Atlantic Ocean on the south and west.

A population of 9.5 million, enjoying a mild climate, without extremes of weather.

A  country with  850 Kms of  Atlantic coastline, Portugal  boasts about its variety
of different beaches,  and many awarded with the EU “Blue Flag”.
